My Agenda for VPSS 2009

Welcome to a new way of thinking ……. Welcome to my platform!

OH MY GOSH! The Solution!!!

To the webpage of a student at Brock who is made of ENERGY. By the time you leave this website, I want you to understand that ENERGY is the cause of spirit, successful clubs, big events and fun parties at Brock.

In the next few pages you will read about unique and simple ideas. All of these ideas came from listening to the concerns of hundreds of Brock students or just from my own personal creativity. Everything presented to you has been summarized for an easier read. To really feel the ENERGY behind my platform, talk to me in person!

Clubs

THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF STUDENT LIFE.

Having clubs growing & working at full potential is going to make this school a heck of a lot more fun!! After all, most of the events at Brock are organized by clubs.

I BELIEVE student clubs are the most IMPORTANT part of any university. I know clubs at Brock need more attention, help and time from BUSU. Therefore my main focus will be to empower, unite and promote the various clubs at Brock.

1.1 – Unified

It’s time to glue the clubs together!

>> Clubs at Brock need to be brought together.  Bringing clubs together regularly will unify and help them to get to know each other.  This is a very big advantage! Clubs will be able to learn about and promote each other’s events, better plan their own events, and share valuable information and resources with each other.  As VPSS I will make sure members from all clubs including myself meet regularly to socialize and talk CLUB!!

1.2 – Clubs Website – www.BrockClubs.ca

What’s more useless than 40+ clubs finding 40+ webmasters for 40+ sites?

>> One of the hardest parts of running any club is creating and maintaining a website.  An AMAZING idea (that I cannot take credit for) is to have a website in which all BUSU ratified clubs will have their own page.  As of right now, club websites are scattered and it can take hours for a student to find up-to-date information on all clubs .  A website should be established under which all clubs can have their detailed up-to- date information, upcoming events, pictures, meeting and sign up information. This will be INVALUABLE.

I will make sure this website is made, promoted and funded.

1.3 – Multiply the Club Budget! LEVY

Clubs should not have to worry about making money!

Clubs spend a lot of time fund raising and worrying about making money. Many clubs get so caught up in fund raising that they barely have time to address the purpose of the club, hold events and advance their club. This needs to change in order to take Brock clubs to the next level. I will work hard to make sure the club budget is not just doubled but much more than that. I want to pass a levy in the coming year that will go towards the club funding account in BUSU. This will without a doubt increase club quality.

1.4 – Help Promote

After all, club events are BUSU events.

>> Clubs NEED more help from BUSU. The many clubs at Brock host hundreds of great events in a single year and I believe BUSU needs to help the clubs promote these events a lot more.  As VPSS I will make sure that club events are being promoted by BUSU. I know this is possible because BUSU has a lot of resources at its fingertips that can help better promote clubs.

1.5 – Resources

>> The problem is not that BUSU does not have a lot of good resources to provide to clubs. It is that clubs do not know the amount of resources available to them.  I will change the tradition of a few clubs coming to BUSU to find more information and make sure that I as VPSS from BUSU will be pushing the resources onto all clubs.

O-Week 2009 / Frost Week

For too many years Brock has had the same unsuccessful and successful events during Orientation and Frost week. It’s time to try new ideas. That doesn’t mean spend more money, it means be CREATIVE.

Being the founder and president of the club that organized the World’s Largest Dodgeball game and broke Brock’s first world record, you can be sure I have the creativity and experience to take O week / Frost Week to a whole new level.

2.0 – Break a World Record!

Something new for O-week? Sounds sweeeeeeeet!

During Frost Week 2008 my Guinness Brock club organized a world record breaking event at Brock. We were successful in beating the record for the World’s Largest Dodgeball game. I believe breaking world records should become tradition for Brock University. I want Brock University to set a record during every Frost and O week! What better way to build enerGy than having fun while breaking a world record?

2.1 - Tower Party

We’re going to party like it’s your birthday – all year!

The tower party is one of the most successful events during O-week. This is a tradition that does not need to be broken. In fact, I believe it should occur more than once throughout the year.  Socializing between students should not end when O-week comes to an end. There is plenty of time in the calendar when Tower party can be re-hosted. All it takes is someone who thinks it should happen.

2.1 – Club Fair

We’re going to party like it’s your birthday!

The club fair this year was held with the vendor fair and lasted two days. Since it proved to be a great idea this year, I will make sure that things are similar next year. I will also address the issue of making it mandatory for clubs to help in residence move-in-day to attend the club fair. I believe the club fair is a necessity to clubs and that BUSU should not be restricting access to attending this event. Instead of forcing clubs to help with move in day, I will make it so that volunteers from clubs receive other very attractive benefits for volunteering.

I will also make it my aim to make sure that BUSU takes part in promoting all the clubs during this event. I don’t think clubs are the only ones that should be promoting themselves.  I will have BUSU make promotional material that includes all ratified clubs.

2.2 – Bad economy plan

So we have a bad economy this year? No big deal!

Bring in more revenue and cut costs. If it sounds too simple to you, that’s because it is! I will address bringing in more revenue for O-week by creating a much needed Sponsorship Coordinator position. This allows us to have a dedicated person to bring in maximum sponsorship, in the year we need it most. This also allows the Events Coordinator to not have to split their time between event planning and finding sponsors. Giving the events coordinator more time to better plan an event will mean the events’ costs are minimized.

Variety of Food – Vegetarian

I believe Brock students need a wider variety of food. I want to bring in more choices for the students at Brock. In particular I want to bring more diversified, halal and vegetarian food from around the world to our campus. I have a plan as to how we can achieve this. If I am elected to office, you can be sure that I will be pushing for this, and I will welcome ideas from students and groups.

Foot Patrol

It’s time to bring Foot Patrol UP TO DATE!

It’s 2009 and the luxury of vehicles is more common than ever. It is time for Foot Patrol to adapt to the 21st century. Earlier in the platform you read my plans to lease vehicles for BUSU and I told you they will be used for multiple purposes. I will use those vehicles to give Foot Patrol a whole new meaning. Foot Patrol will still provide its outstanding services to students in need, but they will give car rides to students rather than accompanied walks. This is very probable and a dedicated person like me will put every effort in to make it happen!

Volunteers

enerGy IS CONTAGIOUS!

Planning in advance planning to energize volunteers with retreats and games throughout the year is crucial to not losing our regular volunteer base. To ensure the energy of our volunteers doesn’t fade after O-week, I’ll make sure the volunteers are active and that we are recruiting members all year.
